Marten Scheffer

Prof. Marten Scheffer (MS) leads the Synergy program for analyzing resilience and critical transitions (SparcS) at the Wageningen University, The Netherlands. MS’s group investigates stability and change of complex systems. The group aims to catalyse novel insights in the mechanisms that govern resilience and CTs in complex systems ranging from the climate and ecosystems to society and the brain. This is achieved by fostering new forms of cooperation between leading scientists working in these fields and scientists working on complex systems theory. Complex systems ranging from societies and ecosystems to the climate and our brain can have tipping points where a micro-scale push can invoke a CT to a contrasting state. Although such systems differ widely, mathematics suggest that some aspects of their behaviour at tipping points are universal. These concepts may help find ways to manage the opportunities and risks associated to tipping points.
